It has an orange-brown color when freshly cut, aging to a darker reddish-brown. The color variation between boards can be significant. There are also small yellow mineral deposits found throughout the wood, making the species easier to identify.
The wood grain is interlocked with a uniform texture, medium to coarse, and naturally glossy.
Rated as very durable, moderately resistant to termites, and susceptible to other insect attacks, although it has good resistance to marine borers.
No characteristic odor.
It has been reported that some species within the Afzelia genus can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract, as well as sneezing.
It is sometimes exported to Europe but is most commonly used locally (especially in Mozambique). Prices in our country are quite high.
This species is not listed in the CITES appendices and is reported by the IUCN as a species with no regeneration concerns.
